Welcome to AW Tutoring!

AW tutoring is a small, well established tutoring company operating in Wantage, Grove and the surrounding area.

What We Offer

AW tutoring provides bespoke tutoring for all age groups from primary to A’level, in a wide range of subjects including the core subjects of Maths, English and Science.

We offer individually planned one-to-one lessons, by assessing the way the student works. Lessons are designed specifically for the student and tailored to suit their style of learning.

Tutoring sessions are normally delivered face to face, in the comfort of your own home, although virtual sessions are also available in some circumstances.

Our Ethos

Our ethos is to build confidence through bespoke tutoring sessions, offering a variety of teaching methods to suit the student with approachable, friendly tutors. This allows us to cater for all abilities including students with additional needs. It is my firm belief that everyone can access education and as such, we endeavour to break questions down into fundamental steps that are logical and make sense to the student, rather than just memorising information. We find that a student’s progress is often magnified as they grow, not only in knowledge, but also in confidence and therefore we find that even away from the tutor (for example at school) they are more able to engage in lessons, ask questions, and challenge themselves to try more demanding problems in tests.

Our Founder, Dr Alison Whitfield

Hi - I am Alison, the owner and manager of AW tutoring.

I have nearly 20 years’ experience of one-to-one tutoring. I have a strong academic background in maths and science, with an honours degree in science and a PhD in microelectronics and began my career working, for several years in the science industry.

I have worked extensively with children of different ages, in various capacities, in both paid and voluntary roles and am passionate about sharing my knowledge with and building the confidence of young people.

I have experience of delivering one-to-one tutoring in both primary and secondary schools, in maths, science and English, along with a wealth of private tutoring experience. I have knowledge of different qualifications, different exam boards and at different levels. I am also an examination marker, which makes me familiar with the required formats for exam mark schemes and grading.

I have an up-to-date DBS certificate and ensure that I maintain high professional standards through regular attendance at relevant training events. Most recently I have attended trainings in ‘Safeguarding’, ‘Working with difficult teens’, ‘An introduction to the Autism Spectrum’ and ‘Recognising and Supporting Dyscalculia’ - ideas for teaching. These all help me to adapt lessons to suit the learners need, which, I believe is the fundamental objective of one-to-one tutoring.

Dear Alison, Huge thank you for your help this year

Dear Alison, Just want to say thank you so much for the tutoring you gave our son to help him through his GCSE maths.

Dear Alison, My daughter had her last Math’s session tonight with her tutor, both the tutors have been totally amazing in supporting my daughter with her Math’s and this has made a big difference to her grades and her confidence.’
